THE STORY OF A KIDNEY

The Story of a Kidney

Kidney, a bean-shaped organ, functions in filtering blood and eliminating waste products. Apart from these vital functions, the kidney also serves to control the electrolyte balance in the body, participates in the regulation of blood pressure as well as stimulating the production of blood cell. About 125 mL of filtrate is produced every minute, and of this amount 124 mL will be absorbed in the organ and only 1 mL is released as urine. Just as big as a fist, helping us maintaining our needs yet we disregard its needs.

In Malaysia, the main factor leads to the failure of kidneys goes to diabetes. And once the kidneys fail to function, you have the options of dialysis treatment or patiently wait for someone to donate a replacement for your kidney. Have you a ever seen a haemodialysis machine? It could be bigger than you. And how ‘comfort' it is to draw your blood out and let it in, out and in again and again. And for the peritoneal dialysis, the catheter is inserted into your abdomen surgically. Oh, that will not be that terrible.

I am not writing to scare the wits out of you. But just to fly you into the world of your own health. Have you ever feel discomfort to have the kidneys in your body? Does it hurt you every time the kidneys work? Yet do you 'feed' it with the right 'food'? Be thankful to Allah for your organs that do not black out when the current is out, do not have to switch it on and off, and do not cost you even a penny.
